A Few New Books on My Shelves

Pile of books

Reading, and books in general, is one of my favourite hobbies. I love exploring all the different worlds writers have created in their minds and educating myself through all the various tips in lifestyle books. No matter how much I enjoy reading blogs, online magazines and seeing all the amazing photography and other content people create online, nothing really beats curling up on the sofa with the latest book I’ve taken interest in.

You may or may not know that it was my birthday recently and every year I like to treat myself to something. This year that ended up being a bunch of books! Ever since I joined GoodReads – which is an amazing platform if you enjoy reading even a little bit – I’ve managed to collect quite a lot of books in my “Want To Read” shelf. After my birthday I browsed through the collection and decided on a few books I’ve been lusting after for quite a while.

These are the books I ended up purchasing!

Pile of books

Let’s start with nonfiction.

Lately, I’ve become very fascinated by poetry. If someone had told me even three years ago that I would actually enjoy reading poetry, I definitely wouldn’t have believed them. But then again, the only poetry books I’ve read until recently have been for school assignments, so maybe those just weren’t the ones for me. Ever since I read Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur I knew that I wanted to give more poetry books a go. Essentially, I bought her other book The Sun and Her Flowers and can’t wait to read it! While Milk and Honey focused mostly on relationships, The Sun and Her Flowers is more about self-growth.

Another poetry book I picked is The Princess Saves Herself in This One by Amanda Lovelace. When I first heard about Amanda’s book I didn’t think that it would be a poetry book but as soon as I did a bit more research on it I was intrigued. Without reading the actual book, I’ve understood that the writing style is quite similar to Rupi Kaur’s so I believe that I will really end up enjoying this!

The last book on the nonfiction front that I ended up purchasing is The Little Book of Lykke by Meik Wiking. I’m currently reading The Little Book of Hygge by the same author and I’ve found it really enthralling so far. While hygge is more about creating a cosy atmosphere around you, lykke is a book about self-growth and happiness which has been a very popular topic for me recently.

For fiction, I went for the books that have been on the top of my “want to read” list for a really long time. The first one is The Carrie Diaries by Candace Bushnell. I have only seen one Sex and the City movie and only a few episodes of the show but The Carrie Diaries was one of the first tv shows I ever watched on Netflix. The Carrie Diaries is a prequel for Sex and the City and focuses on Carrie Bradshaw’s life in high school before she met the girls and became a writer. I absolutely loved the show but unfortunately, it was cancelled after the second season and I decided to read the books instead.

Another book I wanted to read because of a tv show is In the Midst of Winter by Isabel Allende as one of her books was mentioned in Jane the Virgin. I hadn’t heard of her books before but once I did, I’ve noticed them everywhere. According to many different sources, Isabel Allende is an incredible writer, the queen of storytelling as someone mentioned, and in her books, she presents issues like human rights and refugees. I don’t think I’ve ever read a book like this before. It is historical fiction combined with a love story between main characters that are two 60-year-olds which in itself is already very different to what I’m used to as usually, the main characters are younger than 30.

The last book that ended up in my shopping cart was The Waking Land by Callie Bates. To be honest, the first thing that intrigued me about this book was the cover. I think it’s absolutely beautiful! I’m also really excited about the fact that the theme of the book is connected with nature. And that, to my understanding, there’s also some magic involved. I think is the book I’m most excited so stay tuned for a proper review!
